POPs in the Surroundings of E-waste Sites

This report documents severe POP contamination around informal e-waste processing and waste dumping sites in Thailand, focusing on two facilities in Chachoengsao Province and a sludge dumping site in Prachinburi. Samples of soil, sediment, dust and duck eggs were analyzed for brominated flame retardants, SCCPs, dioxins and PCBs.

All three sites showed contamination, with the highest levels in Nong Khok village near the Supcharoen Recycle Co. Ltd. factory. Duck eggs there exceeded EU safety limits for dioxins by more than 24 times, among the highest ever recorded in Asia. Elevated POP levels were also found in soils and dust from e-waste dismantling and burning areas.

The study links this pollution to uncontrolled burning of plastics and industrial sludge dumping, calling for stronger waste management, enforcement of global standards, and tighter regulation to safeguard health and the environment.
