Aligning the financial system and infrastructure investments with sustainable development - a transformational approach is a project funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) aimed at building international consensus to align financial systems with the SDGs and catalyse national regulatory actions. This is being accomplished through the development of national Sustainable Finance Roadmaps in six countries and international consensus building on best practices (e.g. policies, regulations, standards and norms) to green the financial system.
The financial system can play a major role in a transition towards a low-carbon, resilient and inclusive economy. Market innovations and adjustments to key policies, regulations, standards and norms will be critical to greening financial markets and private finance. Cooperation is key to both guiding and scaling efforts to align financial systems with sustainable development.
As the momentum around green finance increases, enhancing international dialogue will help shape and coordinate a more systematic approach to green finance. The Aligning Finance Policies project will serve as a platform for generating discussion, coordination, and cooperation on sustainable finance issues. The project will share tools and knowledge products, including:
- A public Sustainable Finance Discussion for stakeholders to share perspectives and connect.
- Insights and progress updates from national Sustainable Finance Roadmaps.
- Blog contributions from project partners.
- Webinars on topical sustainable finance challenges and opportunities.
- A Diagnostic Toolkit to help financial authorities discover and implement best practices.
Aligning Finance Policies builds closely on the work of UN Environment’s Inquiry into the Design of a Sustainable Financial System, which mapped the practice and potential for advancing such an alignment.
