On 22 January 2026 (14:00-16:30 CET), the Green Growth Knowledge Partnership (GGKP), as part of the GEF-funded and UNEP-led Global NIP Update Project (GEF ID 10785), hosted a virtual webinar on Activity Options for Action Plans for Brominated, Chlorinated and Other New POPs.

The webinar introduced National Implementation Plans (NIPs) action plan options focusing on brominated, chlorinated and other newly listed persistent organic pollutants (POPs) under the Stockholm Convention.

It introduced the integrated approach to reducing and eliminating POPs plastic additives in particular listed brominated flame retardants (PBDEs, PBB and HBCD), chlorinated flame retardants (Dechlorane Plus, SCCPs/MCCPs) and UV-328 across major use sectors including electrical and electronic equipment (EEE)/waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), transport/end-of-life vehicles (ELVs) and buildings/construction and demolition waste (CDW).

The webinar was delivered in English, with simultaneous interpretation into French, Russian and Spanish.

Objectives

  • Introduce aspects of the integrated approach to POPs management, with an emphasis on POPs plastic additives such as brominated and chlorinated flame retardants.
  • Provide an overview of activity options for managing and phasing out POPs plastic additives in major product and waste sectors (EEE/WEEE, transport/ELV and buildings/CDW) and managing related plastics and resources.
  • Offer insights into extended producer responsibility (EPR) for financing waste management in major product and waste sectors.
  • Provide an overview of activity options for managing and phasing out short- and medium-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCP/MCCPs).
  • Introduce a broader approach to substitute POPs plastic additives with sustainable alternatives and avoiding regrettable substitution.

Target audience

  • Stockholm Convention Official Contact Points and National Focal Points, particularly from project countries
  • National officials and experts involved in the process of reviewing and updating the NIPs
  • Practitioners working on POPs inventory and POPs management
  • Members of NIP National Coordinating Mechanism/Committees and Project Coordination Units/Thematic Task Groups
  • Representatives of Regional Centres and other relevant stakeholders
