The Stockholm Convention (SC) imposes a worldwide ban or control on the production and trade of POPs pesticides and POPs used in industrial processes and consumer goods and requires the reduction and minimization of the unintentional production and release of POPs formed as unintentional by-products in industrial and combustion processes. The National Implementation Plan (NIP) Update Project, funded by Global Environment Facility, aims at assisting participating countries to comply with the Stockholm Convention (SC).
This project supports 32 countries across Africa, Asia and Latin America, and the Caribbean regions. It is implemented by UNEP on an international level, and six Basel and Stockholm Convention Regional Centers (BCRCs-SCRCs) in China, the Caribbean, Czechia, Senegal, South Africa, and Uruguay will be acting as executing agencies on a regional level.
The global project includes the following components:
The Green Growth Knowledge Partnership is executing Component 4 of the project on Knowledge management and information sharing. Key GGKP deliverables under component 4 are linked to the development of new knowledge products and tools, the development of the knowledge platform on global and regional levels and the transfer of the knowledge.
The project aims to reduce dependency on external expertise and resources to develop NIP and NIP updates by strengthening the political environment and technical capacities of participating countries. NIPs are dynamic documents to be reviewed periodically and updated to address the newly listed chemicals following the successive SC meetings of the Conference of the Parties (COP). The NIP and the National Reports submitted by the Parties to the Stockholm Convention are key data sources for evaluating the effectiveness of the Convention.
NIP Update and SDGs
In the light of exacerbated global climate change crisis, biodiversity loss, and pollution, addressing the problem of POPs pollutants will contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, in particular, but not only:
- SDG 3 Good health and well-being;
- SDG 9 Industry, innovation, and infrastructure;
- SDG 11 Sustainable cities and communities;
- SDG 12 Responsible consumption and production;
- SDG 14 Life below water;
- SDG 15 Life on land.
